Chapter Seventeen
Linc
I unlocked Annie's townhouse door then dashed back to the car, gently helping her from the passenger seat.
"Thanks," she whispered, still hunched. "I've got it from here."
"The fuck you do. You're grey and look like you're about to pass out." I wrapped an arm around her middle, guiding her to the door. "Let's get you inside."
She moved gingerly, her body shuffling as if she were glass and likely to shatter with the slightest bump.
Inside, I tossed her keys on her kitchen counter, looking around.
"Which way is the bedroom?"
"Second on the right."
I helped her down the hall, only letting her go when we reached her room. With a quick flick of my wrist I turned down her blankets, helping her crawl into bed.
"Thanks," she whispered, collapsing into a tight ball in the middle of the bed. "Sorry to ruin your night."
"You didn't ruin anything." I crouched beside her. "What do you need? How can I help?"
"My tote."
I headed back to the car, finding her bag stashed in the footwell. I locked up, then headed inside, typing out a text to Theo.
Linc: Annie's unwell. Just took her home, gonna stay and make sure she's okay. Give the guys my apology.
Theo: No apology necessary. Call if you need anything. Hope she feels better soon.
"Here." I placed the bag beside her on the bed, watching as she slowly rummaged through it to find a small blister pack.
"Do you need water?"
"Please."
I retrieved a glass from her kitchen, spotting a wheat bag on her counter. I snatched the thing, stuffing it in the microwave before heading back to the bedroom.
Annie had barely moved, her body curled in on itself, her arms wrapped tight around her middle as agonized sounds escaped from behind her tightly pressed lips.
"Fuck, Annie." I helped her sit up, holding the glass of water while she swallowed the pills, gently easing her back to the bed. I began to rub her back.
"Babe, I'm so sorry."
"I told you Crohn's is a pain in the ass," she whispered, her voice heavy with pain. "Ruins everything."
"Nothing's ruined. My plans were a hamburger with the guys, then Netflix."
She flinched, curling into a tight little ball.
"I'll be right back."
I retrieved the wheat bag, wrapping it in a cloth to bring back to her. Annie accepted it gratefully, pressing the warmth against her abdomen, her body still curled in on itself.
She fell silent, her concentration centered on the pain. In an agony of moments, Annie's body began to relax. Her hands loosened from around her stomach, the tension seeping from her shoulders.
I continued to rub her back slowly, watching for what felt like an eternity before the pain began to recede.
"Fuck," she whispered, her eyes closed. "I'm going to have to make a gastro appointment."
"Gastro?" I asked, my tone low and soothing.
"Gastroenterologist. My specialist. He monitors everything. I've been so good for so long. But multiples in one week isâ" her voice broke, a stray tear sliding from under her scrunched-up eyelids. "It's not good."
Multiples? I hadn't noticed
